And that was 2011!

We started Egeniq in October 2010, so 2011 was the first time we had the business going for a full year. Time to have a look at where we are and where we go from here.

Looking back

We had a great year: it exceeded our expectations in many respects. When we started we talked about how it would be great if in the first year we would have 2 well known, interesting customers. As our customers page illustrates, we had far more interesting customers than those 2 we aimed for. We managed to add 3 amazing talents to the team (Felix, Thijs and Allen), we worked with top notch freelancers – but above all: We had fun!

From the Audio Tweet platform we did for BNR to the Video On Demand platform for Pathe, we had great fun delivering interesting projects with interesting technological challenges.

One thing I’m proud of is that from the start we haven’t limited ourselves to The Netherlands. In February we landed an interesting contract with EA Sports in Orlando, and in december we got a contract with a Chicago based company (which I’m not able to name just yet). This thursday I’m visiting London to visit potential clients over there. When you’re a mobile business, borders just seem to slowly disappear.

Looking ahead

In 2012 we want to continue to work on great projects, but there are 2 additional activities we are going to focus on. First, we’re organizing mdevcon on March 10. A conference for and by mobile developers. We’ve learned a lot from many well known mobile developers and we want to bring them over so others can learn from them as well. We also want to give developers a platform for sharing their knowledge and showing off their skills. We currently have a call for papers running (until January 10) so if you’re interested in speaking at mdevcon have a look at the Call for Papers.

The second thing we want to focus on are some products of our own. These are mostly tools that we’ve developed to make our own lives easier, and we think they might be interesting for others as well. We will be releasing a time tracking application that tries to reinvent the way tracking time is done. It should bring the fun back into time tracking (or better: take the hassle out) and will automate virtually everything related to time tracking. Ambitious, but we think an old concept like time tracking could use a revamp. Also, you can soon expect a first release of (censored), a tool that allows developers to easily (censored) (yup, we’re in stealth mode on that one! ;-) ). Of course we’ll continue to add new features to CameraControl, an app that’s increasingly more popular among security firms and surveillance camera owners. Finally we’re continuing development on Nomopass, the OpenID mobile authentication provider based on the Tiqr software we developed for SURFnet. We have a number of other ideas we may work on; we’ll announce those when we’re ready to announce them.

So we’ve had an interesting year and 2012 looks to be at least as interesting! I’d like to thank our team, our partners and our clients for an amazing year, and I hope that we’ll continue to have a great relationship with everyone in 2012!
